Stellies Extend Lead At Top, Downs & Pirates Lose Ground

Stellenbosch FC extended their lead at the top to three points after Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns dropped points in this weekend’s DStv Diski Challenge fixtures.

The Cape Winelands outfit also extended their winning streak to seven matches after beating Marumo Gallants by 1-0 courtesy of Quwan Plaatjies’ 92nd minute strike to seal all three points.

Orlando Pirates suffered a 3-2 defeat in a five-goal thriller against SuperSport United. Matsatsantsa threw away a 2-0 lead after the 63rd minute when Siphamandla Msezana and Mbekezeli Mbokazi scored two quick goals to make it 2-2, but Keenan Bezuidenhout’s strike in the 85th minute stole the points for the Tshwane side as the Buccaneers dropped to fifth place five points behind table-toppers Stellies.

Golden Arrows fashionably ended their winless run, beating Tlou Segolela’s Magesi FC 3-0 at home. Arrows moved to 14th place leapfrogging Marumo Gallants.

Richards Bay also earned a huge margin win after putting five goals past Polokwane City. The Natal Rich Boyz moved to sixth place, six points behind Stellies. Meanwhile, City suffered their third consecutive loss.

On Sunday morning, free-scoring Cape Town City continued to slaughter teams at Malta Park, this time around Chippa United were the victims after a 6-3 drubbing and moved to fourth place with 16 points.

A late equalizer from Sekhukhune United denied Sundowns all three points. Downs took the lead in the 52nd minute through Gomolemo Kekane. When they thought they had it all in the bag, Olwethu Guliwe pounced for Babina Noko to make it 1-1 with the last kick of the game
