PREFACE
The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology released the standard III to IV primary school curriculum in 2016, and it was put into use in 2017. This format of the Standard Four National Assessments is based on that curriculum. The 2016 primary school curricula place more emphasis on the 2014 Education and Training Policy, which highlights students’ competency across all learning faculties.

The format intends to evaluate students’ proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics to the level where they may apply the knowledge they have learned to solve social, political, economic, and technological challenges for their own personal and societal development. In 2018, this format will go into effect.

Six disciplines, which will be taught in Standards III to IV, have been recognized under the new format. Kiswahili, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, and Civic and Moral Education are the disciplines covered. The revised curriculum for Standards III through IV combines Geography and History to create the topic of Social Studies.

Civic and Moral Education is the name given to the topic of civics after the addition of the moral component. Additionally, subjects like personality, sports, and vocational studies that were taught in grades III through IV will start being taught in grades V. The National Examinations Council will administer six topics for Standard Four assessments at the national level: Kiswahili, English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, and Civic and Moral Education. To achieve the goals set for each topic, teachers are urged to base their lessons on the curriculum.

This format was created using the competence standards outlined in the new Standard III to IV primary school curricula. The structure of the assessment paper is intended to be guided by the format for teachers and students. Teachers and students are cautioned against substituting this style for the curriculum. All learning and teaching objectives for standards Three and Four in elementary schools must be accomplished.

An introduction, general objectives, general competencies, specific competencies, and the format of the assessment paper make up the format of each subject that will be tested. The attached assessment guidelines include include awarding criteria as well as criteria for evaluating each general and specific competence.
v
The Examinations Council extends its heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped create this format, including examination officers.
