Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi says the responsibility to get Peter Shalulile back to top form is key to their season.
Shalulile scored his first goal for club or country since May as Sundowns thrashed Golden Arrows 5-0 in the Carling Knockout on Saturday evening at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The relief and elation were evident from the Namibia international captain and his teammates as it was his first goal in nine games into the 2024/25 season.
It’s not every day that a player is afforded the opportunity to play himself back into form at Sundowns, but such is the status and status of the 30-year-old who is closing in on becoming the record scorer in Premier Soccer League history.
“We have made it obvious that we have a responsibility to support Peter, and we have done everything we can, sometimes playing him in matches where he could be tired, we just want him to have some minutes and maybe break the curse and score,” he said.
“Even myself, I celebrated [his goal], because it’s very important for me that Peter is also in top form because we are going to need all our strikers going forward. And the support he’s getting from the team in general has been very good.
“I like the team that I have because I have a lot of very good boys, very sensible human beings who are compassionate, a lot of empathy, and also sympathising with Peter during these hard moments where he was not getting goals. So, it was exciting to see the reaction after he scored as well.”
