SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has addressed the current situation at the club that he once dominated the South African top-flight with.
During his first stint, Hunt won the league three times consecutively between 2008 and 2010 before moving on to Bidvest Wits in 2013 where he won his fourth league crown.
However, nine years later, his return to the club sees them in a different football landscape, with the squad dominated by DStv Diski Challenge graduates.
While he was able to guide the club into the top three in his first season, their first time in a decade – and one point off the top four in his second season, the third season has been a challenging one, as they sit 13th, with one win, one draw and three defeats in five games.
“You know where the team was, what it’s about, this team has the most trophies behind the big three, it’s no mean feat in 25 years,” Hunt said.
“Look around all the teams, look Orlando Pirates, where does four or five or those players come from, go across the road [Sundowns], look at those players, you know what I’m saying… You guys know…
“Youth development is not always about going up, sometimes it’s about going down, but obviously they come up a lot with us. Last year we used 13 players from the Diski team, trying to play CAF too.

“So this catches up with you. This year we played Sundowns away, Cape Town City away, Pirates away twice, Chiefs away, it’s difficult with our squad, so we had a helluva start…
“We just have to grind on, obviously keep working on the training ground and doing things that [improve us], yeah it’s the only thing we can do.”
SuperSport will now travel to Polokwane to host Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium for their next league outing on Saturday (17h30)
