Hlungwani Gives Verdict On Chiefs Penalty Claim & Mofokeng Incidents

Former Premier Soccer League referee Victor ‘The Principal Hlungwani has insisted Kaizer Chiefs should have received a penalty in their 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United, while also asking the referees to protect players like Relebohile Mofokeng.

Amakhosi were beaten by Matsatsantsa on Saturday to suffer back-to-back defeats in the league for the first time under Nasreddine Nabi.

However, the game could have had a different outcome, had Amakhosi received a penalty in the first half when the game was still logged at 0-0 and Edson Castillo appeared to have been fouled inside the box.

“The law says kicking an opponent is a foul,” Hlungwani said, dissecting the incident on SABC Sport’s Soccerzone.

“So, kicking an opponent in the penalty area, a penalty should’ve been awarded. It was not given unfortunately.”

Hlungwani then focussed on several bad tackled against Pirates sensation Mofokeng in their recent games against SuperSport and AmaZulu, which also enraged Doctor Khumalo.

The Principal first explained why both Pogiso Sanoka and Boniface Haba should’ve been sent off for serious foul play.

“Here you can see Sanoka there,” he added.

“He got a yellow card but what do you see there? That tackle is above the ankle, and it endangers the safety of an opponent.

“So, Sanoka should’ve been sent off for serious foul play.”

Haba actually had two tackles on Mofokeng, but somehow managed to stay on the pitch, much to the displeasure of the former referee.

“This [the first tackle] is reckless, it means he acted with disregard to danger of consequences for his opponent,” he continued, looking at Haba’s two tackles on Mofokeng.

“That’s a yellow card, he got nothing. It should’ve been a yellow card for playing with disregard.

“Now, the same Haba does serious foul play again on Mofokeng. This player should’ve been sent off for serious foul play.

“They are destroying these boys, because he’s a very good player. They’re tackling him, the referees have a duty to protect all skilful players.”
